With Fiat purchasing the majority of Chrysler a discussion came up of Dodge potentially getting the shared Alfa-Mazda MX-5 platform. A Dodge MX-5 (Copperhead concept) could compete directly with the Mazda in its own price point, but why would Mazda allow this? I think that if Fiat-Chrysler offered the GrandCherokee/Durango platform as a new CX-9 it would make sense for both automakers. Mazda is short on R/D cash and I hope they don't pump it into another big crossover, but they do need to continue the product.

Indeed it would, but I think the buyer demographic is different for both brand identities.

I'll be the first to admit I don't have a lot of insight into the US market, but wouldn't an Alfa Romeo badged roadster/coupe make a lot more sense than a Dodge ? To me Dodges are trucks and unrefined oversized econoboxes, like the Avenger. In other markets than the NA market a Dodge certainly wouldn't make sense.
Whether Mazda will allow it will depend on what it gets in return. Theoretically it could be lucrative for both manufacturers. It's better to have a great car one competitor offers as well than to not have this great car at all.

I doubt Mazda wants a direct competitor for their low-volume sports car in the world's second-biggest market.
The Alfa will likely command a higher price, so it won't cannibalize the MX-5 Miata. A Dodge would.

Agreed, Dodge would be difficult to market. SRT would be better (since I forget it is now it's own brand)
